Coast Tag Inspector privacy policy
Summary
Inspection runs entirely in your browser. The pages you inspect and the requests the extension observes stay on your device. The extension contains no analytics, advertising or tracking code.
The only personal information the extension collects is the email address you enter if you choose to sign up in the extension. That address goes to Coast Studio so we can send you product updates and new checks.
What the extension reads
To show you how a website tracks its visitors, the extension observes the network requests made by the tab you are viewing and reads that page's script tags and tracking-related JavaScript globals when you open the extension. It classifies requests to known tracking vendors and ad or analytics platforms and checks their parameters for health-related terms, email addresses and phone numbers so it can flag them to you.
This information can include the web addresses you visit and data that the website itself sends to those vendors. The extension uses it only to display results to you inside the extension.
Optional sign-up
The extension works without an account. If you click Sign up / Log in and submit your email address, the extension sends that address, with a field marking the extension as its source, to Coast Studio's form at coast.studio. Our form provider, Netlify, stores the submission on our behalf. The extension also saves the address in Chrome's local extension storage so it can show that you are signed in. Sign out removes that local copy.
We use your email address only to send you product updates and new checks for Coast Tag Inspector. We do not sell it, rent it, or share it with advertisers. You can unsubscribe from any email or ask us to delete your address at any time by writing to jason@coast.studio.
Where it is stored
The request log is held in memory and in Chrome's session storage, scoped to the tab. Chrome clears session storage when the browser closes, and the extension deletes a tab's log when you close the tab, start a new page (unless you turn on Preserve log), or click Clear.
What is shared
Page data is never shared. The extension transmits no browsing data, page content or request logs to Coast Studio or anyone else. Its only network request is the sign-up form submission described above, and only when you submit it.
We do not sell or transfer user data to third parties, use it for advertising, use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending, or use it for any purpose unrelated to the extension. Coast Studio's use of information received from the extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Permissions
- webRequest: observe the tab's requests to identify tracking and ad-platform calls. The extension cannot block or modify requests.
- webNavigation and tabs: know which page a request belongs to and reset the log on navigation.
- scripting: read tracking globals and script tags on the current page when you open the extension.
- storage: keep the tab's log while the tab is open, and remember your email address on your device if you sign up.
- Host access to all sites: tracking can run on any website, so the extension needs to observe requests on whichever site you choose to inspect.
This website
If you request the extension through coast.studio, the email address you enter is stored by our form provider, Netlify, so we can send you the download and product updates. That is covered by the Coast Studio privacy policy. You can ask us to delete it at any time.
